The Cat That Went To Homecoming is the coming of age story of Ellen Jones, an overweight teenage girl from a single family home. She is under constant attack by her peers, bullied because of her weight and her family's poverty. Through volunteer work with her cat, Hershey, Ellen finds her self esteem and the courage to stand up to her bullies. Along the way, she discovers what true friendship and forgiveness are and tells us how Hershey became The Cat That Went To Homecoming. "The Cat That Went To Homecoming addresses many serious social issues including family separation, bullying, homophobia, social isolation, and depression. The compelling story is also about fun, friendship, and forgiveness." Paula Scott-Ginn, Pet Partners Marketing Coordinator

This book delivered an important message to our youth on how it is possible to overcome problems with low self-esteem, social anxiety and depression from the effects of bullying, divorce and weight issues. Reading this story I truly could feel the emotional effects the character Ellen was facing in her life and her unconditional love that she had for her cat Hershey. I also learned interesting information about Pet Therapy, and how it can be a unique way to help many people with emotional struggles in their lives. It was great to read on how negative situations can end with positive outcomes! This is a great story for young and old to read!Product details

The Cat That Went To Homecoming Julie Otzelberger 9781612358215 Books Reviews
A touching YA tale of intolerance and bullying told in an engaging way. In an unforgiving world where being overweight is an unforgiveable sin, Ellen dreams of being slim and popular. Help appears when an acquaintance points her in the right direction on the Yellow Brick Road to happiness. Unfortunately, in reality, there are few Glenda the Good Witches waiting in the wings to help. How much better if Ellen had discovered that Yellow Brick Road on her own.
I really liked the book I read it in one day.
Anyone and everyone who has had any experience in high school whether it was 50, 20, 10, 5, or even 1 year(s) ago can relate to this story. Seriously, take the time to read this book. You will NOT be disappointed.
Only got the book because I know the author. Ok story for teens, but badly edited which I found annoying. I was pleasantly surprised to learn of Julie's work bringing patients and animals together. This is such a tremendous program. Sometimes the folks you pass in the hall can surprise you. Anyway,I'd buy it for a female teen who may be having bully troubles. But seriously, teen bullies almost never get their just deserts, they just turn into mean adults.
This is an EXCELLENT book - it's a wonderful story about overcoming bullying. I highly recommend it to anyone that has ever been a victim of bullying, and to everyone else to learn about overcoming such obstacles.
Very good book and story I actually could not put it down/
This book is not only about overcoming bullying, but it is also about conquering the demons inside of us that prevent us from being the best we can be. The main character Ellen was beaten down and depressed because she didn't have the life she wanted, and some of her classmates took every opportunity to point that out. But she took one single step to improve her self-worth and soon she was overcoming obstacles and living the life she always wanted to live. Of course this is also with the help of her faithful companion. Reminiscent of the Judy Blume books that some of us have read as young adults, this book teaches all of us that we can gain control of our lives; overcoming bullying and demons inside of us.
